You know you're a designer when...

You know you're a designer when you line up your MSN windows to the grid of whatever website you have open in the background.

Either that or you've got OCD :)

jQuery slideUp/slideDown jerky animation

The talented team at Enlighten has recently been investigating jQuery as a platform for enhanced user interface design and general ajaxy goodness recently, and I've been having the odd sensation that its actually a form of programming that I enjoy (wtf?).

Web Design for a purpose

A few months ago I was asked to write an article for the Creative Coding newsletter.

You can read it here.

Website content with personality

I hate boring website content. Like millions of other internet users I have to sit there and actually *read* this stuff, but I also get the fantastic job of making these sites which pain me to read. On the whole its just stagnant informational text, 'keyword-rich' text meant just for search engine robots, or blatant push marketing that screams at your eyeballs.

How to disarm 10 difficult client requests

I try to avoid cross posting other blog's content, but this link is just so incredibly useful I had to record it somewhere.

Enlighten Designs site launch

After an almost solid 2 months of work on my part, Enlighten Designs website has been launched. Its been less than 24 hours, but its already been linked on numerous CSS showcase sites, and seems to be getting widely positive feedback.

The CodeBlacks are victorious!

After an amazingly close competigion (2.7 points out of 100 difference between teams) our team, the CodeBlacks, came out victorious after a mad rush to get our effort out in the last half hour before the deadline. Our entire team worked together fantasticly, and ended up with an amazing end product considering all the problems we ran into, and of course, the timeframe.

You can view the aussie site here: http://aussie.fullcodepress.mbcomms.net.au/.

I was far too busy designing logos and homepages to blog during the event, but the event bloggers themselves were amazing, Renae, Ajay and the rest of the crew did a great job posting, taking photos, recording us, and cheering us on. Thanks guys!

Thanks to the whole Aussie team, the organisers, the judges, and everyone involved. And a very special thanks to Debbie and everyone from the Grampians disAbility Advocacy Association. I hope you love your website as much as we do, and we will continue to improve and polish it over the next year.

Anyway, the last thing i want to see right now is the HTML tags in front of me, so im going to sleep.

Fullcodepress is almost upon us...

Everything is up and running, the network seems to be working, we've sorted out or winning strategy, and are all blogging before the event starts.

All the relevant sites you need are:

www.fullcodepress.com for general info, vlogs, blogs, everything.

www.codeblacks.com for our own personal blogging and most likely crazyness

Full Code Press

I just found out that I made the finalists for the Full Code Press NZ team.

Its very rewarding to be finalists along side Shift's Romain Perin, and Heliocell's Rachel May, both whom I have a lot of respect for.

My thoughts on website width

The width of a design is a hot point for discussion from two very seperate camps. The fixed width camp, and the fluid width camp. A very general summary would be that some people don't like the wasted browser space that comes with fixed width designs, and the others don't like the potentially huge line-length that comes with fluid designs.

A quick glance at my work will make it pretty obvious which camp I fall into, and I'll explain why.

Experimentation

A lot of people ask where inspiration comes from. Not in real life of course, but in movies and books and things. Movies and books written by writers looking for inspiration.
