A lot of people ask where inspiration comes from. Not in real life of course, but in movies and books and things. Movies and books written by writers looking for inspiration.
Much like these movies and books, i find the general concept of "inspiration" to be largely fictional. People expecting inspiration to come down from the heavens and save them in true Deus ex Machina style, are not going to find it. They will end up running out of ideas and writing things where characters pose rhetorical questions about inspiration.
Someone asked me today what sort of style I thought their website should be. This was just a personal site for someone just starting out, so I told them what I'd done, which was experiment.
Everything we do starts as experimenting, trying something new. When i was in highschool I picked up a demo copy of paint shop pro and started to play around. I didn't have a paticular goal in mind, I was just messing about and having fun. When I started designing websites, I tried to experiment with as many styles as I could. My old site went through a new iteration and design style every few months, and had next to no content. While websites with no content don't really benefit the internet as a whole, the experience of experimenting with styles now benefits the clients I work for, as I am able to cater for a broader range of design styles than I would have just creating 3d beveled interfaces.
Learning CSS was another experiment that turned out very well. 5 years ago I was so aposed to the idea of learning HTML, because all I wanted to do was design. Eventually I caved to the pressure, and was able to broaden my range yet again.
I guess try new things is my point. Don't wait for inspiration to hit you in the face. Get out and do things, and you'll find you don't need it.
PS: Sorry this was so rambling and pointless. I just woke up.
